Battery Fires Safety

27 April 2026

Lithium-ion batteries power EVs, e-bikes/scooters, and children’s toys with damaged cells, incorrect chargers, or poor charging practices can trigger thermal runaway (rapid heating, fire, toxic smoke).

Essentials

1. Right equipment: Use certified chargers only. No adapters/extension leads. For EVs, use a rated EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) on a dedicated circuit installed by a qualified electrician.

2. Safe locations: Do not charge on balconies or escape routes. Charge small devices on a hard, non-combustible surface (tile/concrete), away from beds/sofas and combustibles. Keep garages/charging bays clear of storage.

3. Supervision: Monitor while charging. For small devices/toys/bikes, avoid charging when asleep or away. Unplug when full.

4. Battery condition: Stop using if you notice swelling, damage, unusual heat, hiss/odor, or smoke. Replace only with manufacturer-approved batteries.

5. E-bikes/scooters & toys: Follow maker limits. Don’t exceed charger voltage/current. Let batteries cool before charging. Never cover packs or chargers.

6. Storage & transport: Store in cool, dry, and ventilated space. Keep partially charged if stored long-term. Protect from crushing, puncture, or water ingress.

7. If something goes wrong: If you see smoke, popping, or flames—evacuate, close doors, call emergency services. Do not re-enter. For EV fires, responders may need prolonged water cooling. Alert them to the battery type and location.

Today’s quick check: Correct charger ✓ • No charging on balcony/egress ✓ • Device on hard surface ✓ • Pack not hot/swollen ✓ • Area clear of combustibles ✓
