Balconies are high-risk edges exposed to wind, heat and crowding.
Most incidents—falls, fires, and falling objects are preventable with basic controls.

Essentials

1. Supervision: Keep children and pets under constant watch, fit child-resistant locks, never allow climbing or sitting on railing.

2. Barriers: Maintain 1200 mm balustrade height and infill gaps less than 25 mm. Check glass/anchors for damage, corrosion, or looseness.

3. Layout: Keep furniture, planters, and ladders away from rails.

4. Housekeeping: No storage of loose items or heavy loads, keep drainage clear, remove trip hazards.

5. Fire safety: No open flames/BBQs. Do not charge or store e-bikes/scooters or Li-ion batteries on balconies. Keep exits clear.

6. Prohibitions: Never store LPG/flammables. Do not drop/throw anything over the edge. Avoid water overflow that can cause slips.

7. Work at height: Use stable access only. Contractors must use proper fall protection.

Today’s quick check: Rails intact • No climbables by the edge • Balcony uncluttered • No flames/batteries/LPG • Wind-secure light items.
