Electricity is essential at home, but shock, arc faults, and electrical fires can start in seconds. Often from overloaded sockets, damaged cords, wet-area misuse, counterfeit chargers, or missing protection (RCD/GFCI, correct breakers, earthing). Good habits and basic controls prevent most incidents.
Essentials
1. Plan & protect: Use RCD/GFCI where water is present. Match breaker ratings. Keep panels accessible, dry, and labelled.
2. Do not overload: One high-power appliance per outlet. Never daisy-chain adaptors. Uncoil extension reels fully.
3. Cords & appliances: Replace damaged leads. Don’t run under carpets. Use approved plugs and earthing.
4. Wet areas/outdoors: Keep hands dry. Use weather-rated equipment. Never use extension leads in bathrooms.
5. Charging & batteries: Charge on hard, non-combustible surfaces. Use certified chargers. Keep exits clear. Stop using swollen/hot packs.
6. Maintenance & response: Schedule qualified inspections. Know how to isolate power. For shocks, isolate first, then give first aid and call emergency services.
